The Journey

Artists Statement 'The Journey' developed from the salvage of an abandoned project (see 'The Rehearsal'). The plan to paint the interior if the Citizens Theatre Glasgow had gone no further than the drawing stage when the theatre unexpectedly closed for several months. Having been left 'up in the air' with the drawings completed I was casting around for some way to make use of them.

Remembering an idea that had been sparked off by the very first drawing I made in the dismal halflight between shows, the drawing was retrieved for another look. The very rough drawing had suggested the idea of a ruined theatre in a rocky landscape. The picture imagined was unclear but very intriguing - the finished work still surprises me.
