The Ghostly Galleon
Artists Statement - "When this painting was sold in 1994 I sent the purchasers an exposition of the powerful and significant dream of which this painting is the visual expression. Afterwards it seemed to me that I should not have done so. Not only was it an imposition on the freedom of the owners to arrive at their own interpretation, but worse, the paintings essential element of mystery may well have been compromised. Symbolism in art should not be so impenetrable that it's meaning can never be recognised without lengthy expositions : nor should the viewer, with whom the artist is attempting to communicate be deprived of that challenge unless they choose otherwise. Diverse interpretation there may be but hopefully if the painting is true - the truth with be known".
